After 14 years of Conservative neglect, Devon’s bus services are in decline. Services across the county fell by nearly a third between 2010 and 2023, and collapsed by over 40% within Exeter. But Labour are following through on their promise to bring better bus services back to every community.
The Labour government has announced £83 million to improve bus services in the South West — part of a £1 billion national investment to support better, more reliable services. Crucially, Labour is giving every community new powers to take back control of local bus routes and fares through a new Buses Bill.
Despite this, Conservative-run Devon County Council refuses to commit to using the powers already available through the Devon and Torbay Combined Authority. Labour will act where the Tories have failed, using new franchising powers to deliver reliable, affordable bus services that connect communities to the jobs, education and services they need.
It’s time to end the postcode lottery of bus services. Vote Labour on 1 May to ensure Devon gets the transport network it needs.
