Regional Funding for Deprived Communities
Regional Funding for Deprived Communities

Comment by Luke Pollard MP, Plymouth Sutton and Devonport: what do you notice about the funding in this image? This is the breakdown of how much funding the PM is making available to deprived communities … and yet again we don’t get our fair share despite having some of the poorest communities in the country in the far SW.

Since being elected I’ve argued consistently for the far south west and Plymouth in particular to get our fair share of funding. We don’t at the moment.

Since coming to power in 2010 this Tory Government, our city’s Tory MPs and the region’s Tory MPs have voted to cut our already poor funding. They’ve voted to cut transport funding. Voted to cut care for the elderly and our most vulnerable kids with social care cuts and they’ve voted to slash support to councils like Plymouth that has now lost 60p in the pound. Police and fire cuts and so much more besides.

Austerity and poverty is causing real harm in Plymouth. Food bank use is up, poverty is up, the number of kids turning up to school hungry is up.

Not sure if you can tell but I’m pretty annoyed about this. Just £33m for the entire south west region over four years so around £8m a year for our entire region. Pathetic. That’s not even the amount of the latest Tory cuts to our city council’s budget the Tories voted for a few weeks ago assuming we got the entire region’s allocation….

And now the PM thinks she can buy her way to winning the Brexit votes by giving a tiny fraction of what she has taken away back to councils? Dream on, Prime Minister.
