Labour has called for the ‘Vanishing Chancellor’ to step up and take action to support families facing a Tory cost of living crisis.

Rishi Sunak has form when it comes to pulling a vanishing act. He is currently in hiding while families face an ongoing cost-of-living crisis, while last month he was ‘missing in action’ when the hospitality sector faced a wave of Omicron-linked cancellations, and in October he again failed to give businesses clarity as they struggled under a fuel and supply chain crisis.

February will mark Sunak’s second year as Chancellor, and his pattern of behaviour when he comes under pressure is now entirely recognisable. Labour has called on him to come out of hiding and provide the leadership that the British people have every right to expect of him.

Pat McFadden MP, Labour’s Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said:

“Once again, when British families and businesses need support, the Chancellor has pulled a vanishing act and disappeared.

“When the going gets tough, Rishi Sunak goes missing.

“Labour would give families security by immediately cutting VAT on energy bills now – part of our plan to save households around £200 or more, as well as targeted support for those who need it most – with up to £600 in total off their bills.

“Labour has set out a plan. The Chancellor is silent.”
