Labour is taking action to stop firms profi teering from children in care — a national scandal where private providers have been making up to 25% profit from foster care contracts. Vulnerable children deserve better. Labour’s Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, has already warned firms that the Government will step in to cap profits if they don’t put an end to this “exploitation in pursuit of profit”.
In Devon, Labour is leading the charge to deliver better, more affordable care. We are committed to providing higher quality local care through not-for-profit providers, including co-operatives, social enterprises, and charities, to ensure that public money is spent on improving children’s lives, not boosting company profits.
A key step has already been taken. Labour councillors in Devon secured unanimous support for a motion that opens the door to more community-led care providers, which is already driving fresh thinking within County Hall.
Working with those who have already developed alternative models across the country, Labour will deliver compassionate, cost-effective care that puts children first.
