Thanks to 14 years of Conservative mismanagement, Devon’s roads are in a shocking state. Road users are paying the price, with pothole damage costing drivers over £500 million nationally each year and a rise in accidents for cyclists, who are at greater risk of injury.
The Labour government is delivering on its promise to reverse Tory decline. Devon has been given an extra £22.5 million for road maintenance this year, enough to fill over 300,000 potholes. But Conservative-run Devon County Council has a poor track record of looking after our local roads. 10% of B and C roads are currently in need of maintenance, double the national average and worse than comparable local authorities. Worse still, they’re spending £115 per pothole repair, far higher than the England average of £79. Labour will take a commonsense approach to purge the potholes:
1. Reviewing repair criteria – considering the safety of all road users
2. Improving reporting – using smart technology to report more potholes, more quickly
3. Ensuring better value – with a sensible approach to repairs
The Labour government has announced that for the first time, every council in England must publish how many potholes they’ve filled or face losing cash.
