A row over part of a well-known park which has been fenced off for years has escalated after Exeter’s MP and three councillors wrote an open letter demanding action.

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, plus councillors Richard Branston, Matthew Vizard and Carol Whitton penned the letter to South West Water calling on them to resolve the issues surrounding the Larkbeare sewer, which runs through Bull Meadow Park.

They claim the sewer has required repair for more than four years, leading to part of the park being cordoned off.

The letter also accuses South West Water of refusing to acknowledge that the sewer is their responsibility and failing to respond to them for 18 months.

The letter states: “As elected local representatives, we are asking South West Water to bring this long outstanding problem to a swift conclusion.”

Newtown and St Leonards city councillor, Richard Branston said: “I am deeply frustrated that this matter remains unresolved, and that efforts by Exeter City Council and Devon County Council to resolve it have been met with silence from South West Water for more than 18 months.

“Local residents and park users have a right to an explanation from South West Water and, more importantly, action, so that their park and local road can be fully restored.

“I await South West Water’s response with interest.”
