I’m Peter Hill and I’m the local candidate for Tiverton West in the upcoming Devon County Council elections. I had a great education at local state schools in Tiverton before progressing to university and returning to work in the town.
Unfortunately the quality of education we are offering our children today is suffering due to the chronic underfunding by the Tories especially in Devon where spending per pupil is hundreds of pounds less than in other counties.
One of the first things the Tory government did in 2010 was to scrap Labour’s new school building programme, leaving the students of Tiverton High School stuck in buildings barely fit for purpose as our town continues to grow.
Tiverton High School lost its sixth form and Petroc college no longer provides A levels, as a result local children now need to make a 30-50 mile round trip to study A levels.
This has broken the connections between the A level students of Mid Devon and deprived the town of hundreds of young people that would otherwise contribute to the local economy and nightlife.
The Tories have been in charge for over ten years and their record in education simply isn’t good enough. Due to their failures Tiverton West is an area with a low level of advancement into higher education.
If I’m elected I’ll campaign tirelessly to get Tiverton the education our young people deserve including a new Tiverton High School and the return A level provision to Tiverton.
If good quality education is a priority for you, please vote for me on May 6th.
